If you want to study postgraduate teacher training in England that leads to qualified teacher status (QTS), you may be eligible for a bursary.
You can obtain tax-free postgraduate bursaries if you’re preparing to teach a certain subject. If you are eligible, you will be awarded a bursary without having to apply.
Organizations that are passionate about their subject matter give out postgraduate scholarships. They combine tax-free payments with additional perks like networking opportunities, coaching, and subject-specific support. You can apply straight to the scholarship provider if you qualify.
A person cannot receive both a scholarship and a bursary simultaneously.
If you are awarded a scholarship or bursary, you do not have to pay it back.
Scholarships and bursaries are not available for: teacher training in all subjects that is salary-based. If your training starts between September 2026 and July 2027, the figures mentioned above will be relevant.

Eligibility for bursaries
To apply for this, you do not need to submit a bursary application; it will be awarded to you automatically if you meet the qualifications.
To qualify for a bursary, you should be registered with Student Finance (unless you are training to teach languages or physics). Furthermore, you need to possess at least one of the following:
a master’s degree or a bachelor’s degree with honors at a 2:2 level, or
a doctoral degree.
How bursaries are paid
Throughout the course of your degree, your teacher training provider will pay a bursary for at least 10 months. When you will receive the payments will be confirmed by them.
With bursary payments, you won’t have to pay taxes or national insurance.
Repayment of a bursary is not required.

How to get a bursary
Applying for a bursary is not necessary. Your provider will determine if you qualify for a bursary when you apply for teacher training. Before you begin your course, your provider will offer written confirmation if you are.
